Wear Your Favorite Summer Duds All Year Long

19 Nov

One of the saddest days of the year is when you have to say goodbye to your beautiful summer wardrobe and break out the winter gear. Don’t get us wrong, we love cuddling up in a cute sweater and comfy scarf–but you might not have to kiss your summer dresses goodbye quite yet.

And don’t leave out the scarf and sweater either.

Here we have a super cute spaghetti strap, empire waist dress. Looks perfect for a summer night, but by adding a few pieces….

Add a blazer, a scarf, and some tights or leggings and you have a totally fall appropriate dress.

Moving on.

You may be saying to yourself, “Duh, anyone can add a blazer and a scarf.” Yes. You’re right,  but don’t discredit layering under your dress! Layering the right pieces under your summer dress can add a new level of warmth as well as flair.

Here we have a sleeveless jersey sun dress. Totally adorable on its own, but not quite warm enough for colder temperatures.

While at first glance this dress looks very summery, the red and green shades against the black actually translate very well to a “Christmasy” feel when adding a few key elements.

A thin long sleeved shirt and dark red tights instantly give this outfit a “colder weather” look.

Here’s another example of layering under.

Add a cute button up and some stockings…

Even a blazer over that would be adorable.

I’d like to revisit outer layering. Just because you’re putting something over your dress doesn’t mean it has to be a jacket or cardigan.

Here we have a cute color/pattern blocked dress. The gathering at the waist makes it easy to layer on another top.

Adding a cute sweater over this dress completely changes the feel of this look.

Furthermore, sometimes just layering on a basic top can do the trick.

Totally presh summer romper.

Add top, tights, boots–done.

These are just a few ideas to help get your fashion ball rolling. Be creative and stay warm!

Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2 World Premiere

14 Nov

I’m sure most of you twitterpated twi-hards out there are absolutely spazzing about Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2. Stars all the way from Rob and Kristen down to Booboo and Fivel Stewart were dressed to the 9’s for the world premiere of the movie this past week.

Wanna steal Rob’s look in a girly chic way?

Grab yourself one of these cute blazers, a simple top, some skinny slacks, killer accessories, and of course some kickin’ shoes to polish off this classy tom girl look.

This sassy vamp really knows how to make a statement! Judi Shekoni looks phenomenal.

If you’re not drooling over this Ilja Visser beauty maybe you’ll drool over its just as cute, less expensive cousin.

Elle Fanning scored a 9 out of 10 with this gorgeous Prada dress. (One point deduction for confusing shoes.)

Pretty in pale pink.

While Kristen looked stunning in this Zuhair Murad gown, we’re not crazy about wearing floor length see through lace unless you’re a vampire. As well, we support wearing your gorgeous Jimmy Choo’s if you’re lucky enough to have them.

We suggest skipping the granny panties and lace…but if you really really can’t resist…

Charlotte Russe|26.99

But we’d really like you to resist.

We vote that instead you opt for a cute sheer lace dress like this and leave the visible underwear far far behind you.

Enjoy and please wear red carpet styles responsibly.

Accessorize With BRIGHTS

6 Nov

Wanna have some fun?

We all know how it is to put together a super cute outfit that ends up looking a little blah because of all its earthy tones. If you’re like me you wear a lot of black, navy, grey, white, brown, and other muted earthy tones –and that’s probably because it’s just the majority of what’s in your closet. Now, instead of going on a 500$ shopping spree and buying all new bright clothes (which is great if you can afford it, but most of us cannot), or waiting 6 months to accumulate new bright articles of clothing with each new shopping trip, you can do something even better (and cheaper)! Just add bright accessories!

Spoiler Alert: It’s SIMPLE to take your outfit from drab to fab just by adding bright accessories (and faster and cheaper as well!).

Bright accessories just add that extra POP you’re looking for, and it’s just one of those simple stylist secrets to looking amazing.

Here are some of the many ways for bright colors to show up in your outfit:

Adding bright earrings, necklaces, and rings to any number of outfits to give it a new spin.

.:Head gear:.

The bandana is probably one of my new favorite things. It’s perfect for a bad hair day, or for just adding some extra color and flair to an every day look.

Note: Taylor Swift’s hat makes her look pop so much more than Taylor Momsen’s!

Here’s another bandana look that I love. Hair down or up, it’s a win every time.

Bright hats just have this ability to turn one outfit into something completely different in 3 seconds.

Bright purses are just another simple way to add color to your outfit. Purses are in GRAND supply at Plato’s Closet. Hit it up ladies.

.:The art of shoes:.

Check out these runway examples!

Shoes are an art, in my opinion. They come in so many styles and colors. Visit the nearest Goodwill or Plato’s and you’ll find so many amazing pairs of shoes for very little $. Also, they will be more one of a kind since they are probably not sold in stores any more!

GREAT NEWS! I went to Goodwill last week and bought 4 belts for 8$. Also, all the old retro colored belts are in there just hanging out since your mom’s friends finally got rid of them. You should stop in.

It’s Fall ladies! A scarf can be both useful and adorable! Walmart has brightly colored scarves for 5$, and they’re sold in abundance at resale shops for very little $.

The simplest and cheapest trick of all? Nails and makeup!

Just adding bright fingernail polish or bright lipstick can absolutely add another element to a boring outfit. Graci and I have fallen in LOVE with red lipstick, and bright nail polish is also high on our list of favorites. Have fun with these ladies. It’s a fast, classy, and adorable way to give your look that extra little oomph.

Be yourself, always.

Wear these. Forever.

I’m not much for diet colas, but how true is this quote? Ladies, through the years trends come and go. Who can say they’ve never looked at old pictures and cringed at what they were wearing or what their hair looked like?

I said it so you don’t have to.

Don’t be ashamed! I’m sure at the time you looked ‘hawt’. But let’s think back on the things we’ve consistently gotten right. Some things will never go out of style.

The LBD. A staple in every woman’s closet.

The classy pump.

We suggest you save these bad boys for a special occasion.

And last but not least, the tailored blazer.

Making sure you have these classic staples is truly the base of a good wardrobe. Don’t have them? Hit up your local thrift store and we just about guarantee you’ll find what you’re looking for. Need one now? No time to bargain hunt? Check out forever21, Charlotte Russe, and Plato’s Closet for guaranteed finds.

Button Down Shirts: Tomgirl or Tomboy? We Vote Both!

5 Nov

So, as many of you do not know, I spent the summer working on a dude ranch in Wyoming. It was the coolest experience ever, but also left me with a lot of button down shirts hanging in my closet. Now, I’d bet a lot of money that 90 out of 100 of you have button down shirts hanging in your closet that you rarely wear. At the very least, I know that your mom made you take senior pictures in a white one, along with some dark wash jeans. I also know that a number of jobs you, the rest of society, and I have worked at required button down shirts –Hollister, some waitressing jobs, dude ranches, hotels, whatever, you’re not retarded so I know you get me. The problem here is, most of you just don’t know what to do with them now. They end up at Goodwill or Plato’s Closet for the next sucker to come and buy for their new job.

That is all about to change.

Graci and I are about to show you just two of the MANY ways to wear a button down.

Now, we laugh about being twins, but we seriously are. We packed clothes for this shoot and really didn’t tell each other details about what we brought. Anyways, we ended up having the same shirt in different colors, and we pulled them out of the car at the same time and freaked out like the children we are (let me just tell you, this happens every time we see each other). Lydia, (our photographer) almost died laughing.

The boots we did buy together, or, I ordered mine, then Graci asked if I would care if she bought the same pair in another color. What do you think I said? “Heck no I don’t care. We already own doubles of almost everything else by sheer happenstance. Follow your heart.” So she did. Anyways.

Here you go. Graci displays the Tomgirl side of this look perfectly. She added a tie to a pink pinstriped shirt, which ended up being very Spencer-esque (from Pretty Little Liars), then she added a headband to keep it girly, and donned combat boots to make it very Tomgirlish.

On the other hand, is the Tomboy look. I pulled out my favorite pair of suspenders, clipped them over the blue pinstriped version of the shirt (leaving it a little untucked and sloppy for an unkept look), added a fedora to keep it a little boyish, then donned my combat boots as well.

The two versions of this look have very little variation, but it’s amazing how just the right accessories turned the look from girly to boyish. We loved these outfits, and guess what? They’re totally affordable!

Blue pinstriped shirt = 5$ on sale at Aeropostle

Pink pinstriped shirt = 3$ at Goodwill

Fedora = 3$ at a huge flea market

Headband = 1$ at Claire’s

Suspenders = 4$ on Ebay (Y’all, I kid you not, Ebay is the greatest).

Tie = 2$ at Goodwill

Graci’s skinny jeans = 10$ at Forever21

My skinny jeans =10$ at a resale shop (They’re American Eagle).

Graci’s combat boots = 20$ Charlotte Russe

Skye’s combat boots = 20$ Charlotte Russe

Graci’s look = 36$ total.

My look = 42$ total.

Eat that up, ladies, it’s good for you. And the coolest part? ALL of these pieces can be worn in multiple outfits!

Be bold and have fun with it.

If you’re in a mad rush for suspenders, hot topic has them for about 8 bucks, but STOP. Goodwill has the more legit, real life, VINTAGE versions for about 3 or 4 bucks. ALWAYS go there first! Also, button down shirts, ties, and occasionally name brand skinny jeans can be found at Goodwill as well. Also, Plato’s Closet is my safe haven. A word to the wise, try these places first BEFORE you head to the mall. It’ll save you so much money, and you’ll be much more likely to have one-of-a-kind pieces since they’re older and not sold in bulk anymore!

Fashion can be very inexpensive. Dressing adorable is all about finding pieces for super cheap, and just putting them together in new and improved ways.

When you hear the word fanny pack what do you think?

Let me just take a guess…

We don’t blame you. Fanny packs have had a bad rap since someone decided it made more sense to sling a bag over your shoulder than to strap it around your waist. But let’s take a closer look.

Fanny Pack Pros:

  • Hands free–who hasn’t gotten sick of your purse taking up space where a perfectly good shopping bag could be?
  • Easier on the shoulder–no more red marks on your shoulders!
  • Aaaaaannd that’s all we would think of.

So why are we defending the fanny pack?

Because Rachel Zoe told us so.

During Mercedes Benz Fall Fashion Week for Spring 2012 something magical happened. Rachel Zoe opened our eyes to the possibilities of fanny packs and made us believe again. Are we running out to get them? Not quite. But I for one have been dreaming of  the hands free life for a while. While visions of levitating purses are a bit far fetched, these new waist bags(I can’t use the phrase “fanny pack” anymore, I just can’t) are definitely something keep on your BOLO list.

Rachel Zoe Spring 2013

Sharp and classy. We are digging these polished packs. While they haven’t hit the stores yet we’re predicting a surge.

And not just for hipsters.

Ladies, Ladies, Do You Wanna Roll In My Mercedes?

3 Nov

Skye and I have been reviewing the Mercedes Benz Fall Fashion week for the spring 2013 collections. Let me tell you, we have much to rejoice. The runway was littered with PLENTY of little beauties that we can’t wait to help you re-create. While the runway can get a little fantastical, some very talented designers worked very hard to come up with some beautiful and totally street wearable styles. We’ll be posting plenty of MBFFW13 (Mercedes Benz Fall Fashion Week for Spring 2013) reviews, so check back and stay informed. 😉

While every designer is different and has their own personal flair, there we’re some definite trends on the runway that are going to be spring musts. But why wait for spring? This years MBFFW13 had plenty of versatile styles that we think you can rock for fall and winter.

Dark Romantic- This year we saw a TON of dark, punky, romantic clothing. Which we’re loving. While a couple years ago your mom would have called you a “goth” for sporting black nail polish, now a little “black magic” can be very polished and alluring. Designers like BCBGMAXAZRIA, Rachel Zoe, Calvin Klein, Jill Stuart, Phillip Lim, and Herve Leger all rocked the runway with “black beauties”. While this was the Spring 2013 we prefer to save the dark looks for fall and winter and reserve spring for the brighter looks.

Our Take:

Dress-Goodwill $7 + Shoes-Garage Sale $3 + Stockings-Target $3 + Headband-forever21 $5

See Through Stunners- Another look that’s been trending for a while is pieces comprised of flowy sheer fabric as well as lace. Extremely soft and romantic this trend is doable all year round. Diane Von Furstenberg, Marchesa, Jason Wu, Carolina Herrera, and Jill Stuart were just a few of the designers to utilize light airy materials.

The AABBCC’s of Skin Care

3 Nov

I know we’ve all been seeing it, “BB Cream this!” “BB Cream that!”. But what is a BB cream? Or an AA cream or CC cream? Do they work? While folks are going abbreviation crazy, we have a simple guide to help you sort it out! And you won’t even need a song to remember them.

AA- Anti-aging cream.

Pretty straight forward, ladies! As the name would suggest, these are creams that claim to make you look younger! Often with ingredients like retinol that help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, amino acids that help stimulate collagen production and cell renewal, and alpha hydroxy acids/beta hydroxy acids which act as an exfoliant helping dissolve the natural substance that holds dead skin cells to your living skin cells.

Conclusion: Doesn’t sound too bad right? In theory these creams sound wonderful! A modern miracle! Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. According to a 2011 consumer report* wrinkles were only reduced by a little less than 10% over 12 weeks! That’s a pretty measly improvement and actually isn’t even visible to the human eye! Another study in 2009 by* concluded that cheap moisturizers worked just as well if not better than expensive AA creams.

Our Suggestion: Skip the expensive AA creams and go for a great light weight moisturizer (preferably one with UV protection!) and exfoliate 2-3 times a week for healthy glowing skin.

BB- Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm.

The new beauty trend from Asia, BB creams are a “One and done” for skin! A tinted moisturizer, primer, foundation, AND sunblock. All hail the convenience and simplicity of the BB! While this cream sounds great, and is, let’s talk the details–let’s tackle the components one at a time. Moisturizer-While the BB claims moisture if you have dry skin you’ll probably want to put on a thin layer of your favorite light weight  moisturizer before your BB. Being tinted it will go on more smoothly and evenly with dry skin quenched. Even if you don’t have dry skin, can’t hurt! Primer-First off, how many of us use primer on a daily basis anyway? According to Allure November 2012 the BB should take place of a primer! So if you don’t normally use one it’s just an added bonus. Foundation-While the BB isn’t a heavy duty foundation it can be perfect for day to day coverage! A light layer should improve skin tone and even out any blotchy spots. Sunblock-While the coverage the BB provides would never take the place of a full fledged sunblock on a hot July day, it should do the average lady a lot of good on a typical fall-spring day! Let’s say Monday you’re heading to class or work with minimal time outside, the BB cream will do just fine. However, if Saturday you’re hitting the trail for a day hike you’ll wanna bulk up on the sunscreen. The only thing to watch out for with this guy is acne. Acne prone skin should avoid using the BB everyday. Also, acne prone skin would be advised to washing and moisturizing with an anti-acne product before applying BB. Washing and moisturizing after wear is also encouraged.

Conclusion: All aspects of the BB cream are alluring, who doesn’t want to turn five steps into one? The BB cream will definitely speed up your morning routine and add a little polish to your day to day look.

Our Suggestion: If you have a couple extra dollars pick up a BB and give it a shot! The only thing you have to lose is time off your beauty routine. Be careful of clogged pores! Wash all make up off at the end of the day and exfoliate 2-3 times a week for clean glowing skin.

CC- Color Control, Color & Care, or Color & Correct.

Basically the CC Cream is an advanced BB cream. The CC cream offers everything the BB cream does, just with bigger benefits! CC Creams are the newest to hit the market and with everyone stuck to BB they haven’t quite taken off yet. But when you see the big name skin companies coming out with these new CC creams you’ll thank us for knowing about them in advance! The CC cream was developed to be a refined version of the BB, all the marvelous benefits–but magnified. Better coverage, more moisture, and better UV protection!

Conclusion: While we haven’t seen too many brands producing the CC it’s a good one to keep your eye out for.

Our Suggestion: For now hold onto your BB’s ladies. It’s CC contender is more heavy duty, but unless you’re needing some major coverage stick with the cheaper alternative for your daily routine.

Now that you are able to make some informed choices about your AABBCC’s let us tell you some of our favorite skin products!

Moisturizer- Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer. Keep your skin moisturized and oil free by applying a dime sized amount of lotion to face and neck. For best results apply after shower when skin is soft and thirsty for moisture! One bottle will last you forever!

Sunblock- Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen. Guaranteed break out free superior protection. Use as recommended everyday for happy healthy skin!

Exfoliator- St. Ives Apricot Scrub was a constant for me until I discovered DG Medicated Apricot Scrub. Know what the DG stands for? Dollar General. That’s right, ladies, almost identical to St. Ives and even Walmart’s Equate, the DG scrub is less than half the cost for the exact same results.

DIY Exfoliator- Mix two parts of your favorite face wash, one part favorite facial moisturizer, and one part plain ole sugar into your new facial exfoliator! Wet face and rub all over in small circles to remove dead skin. Scrub until sugar is dissolved, rinse, and admire your shining soft face. For body scrub mix one cup sugar with one cup Dawn Hand Renewal with Olay. Add 2-3 Tbs. of coconut or olive oil, and repeat sam process as facial exfoliator. The Dawn sounds like it would be harsh on your skin, but the results are pretty phenomenal! Apply lotion after for best results.

The Boyfriend Sweater

2 Nov

Ladies, I’m sure you’ve all noticed the upsurge of 80’s sweaters and tights showing up in magazines and malls, but have you actually tried it out? If you haven’t, or even if you have… here’s a quick rendition of how to take that look from bland to grand, do it without spending very much at all, and rock it better than Denise Cosby herself.

The easiest way to begin your outfit is to steal. Now, I’m not encouraging you to shoplift here; I’m just encouraging you to make use of the phrase “What’s mine is yours” and raid your boyfriend’s clothes. Call him up, go over without asking, whatever it is you do, and make a beeline for his closet. Look through his old sweaters, or if he’s trendy and has new ones then go for those. You want one that’s big enough to cover your butt, because a butt hanging out in tights just isn’t our favorite thing, and the point of the Boyfriend Sweater is that it looks large on you. Now, if you don’t have a boyfriend, I’m sure you have a dad. Substitute father for boyfriend and repeat previous steps. Last resort: If you don’t have a dad nearby, or if he’s a cool cat and threw away all his retro sweaters, get your cute booty to the nearest Goodwill. Goodwill is a gold mine for all the retro styles that are in right now, and if I start ranting on that we’ll never finish this entry, so anyways, go straight to the men’s sweater rack at Goodwill and start searching.

The sweater I’m wearing in these pictures (the green and black striped one) was a Goodwill find. I think it was 4$, and it made my life so much better to add it to my closet. Be brave with patterns and colors; you can’t really go wrong. The one Graci is wearing is her husband’s sweater. So you see here, we’ve already utilized two of the three options for sweater finding.
The second thing you need to add to your outfit is tights. Don’t be afraid to wear patterned tights if your sweater is a solid, and make sure you wear solid tights if your sweater is patterned. If you mix this up you’ll just look like someone stuck you in a blender. There is a time and place for mismatched patterns, but the tights-and-sweater part of this look really isn’t it.

Once you’ve succeeded in getting the tights and sweater part of your look done, the body of this outfit is finished. Lastly, to bulk it up and add a fashion-magazine-I-know-what-I’m-doing aspect to this outfit, you should definitely add a hat, scarf, or similar killer accessory.

Fedoras and hobo hats are the best for this look, and a large contrasting scarf is a must. We used white and black scarves, but if you can really be pretty bold with the scarf and hat part of the outfit. Don’t be afraid of bright colors or slightly contrasting patterns; just make sure it blends with the color palate.

Lastly, add your shoes! We love combat boots. They just complete so many outfits in the most perfect way… but if you have other boots you can’t stay away from, or keds tennis shoes, go for it. We support you.
