2012 GRAMMYS!

14 Feb

2012 Grammys

The night that every musician and music lover looks forward to! You settle in on the couch, grab a snack and drink, don your favorite band t-shirt, and get ready to see some of the most entertaining, quirky, and moving musical performances of the year. But if you’re like me, and you are, you also cannot wait to see what the guys and gals down at the Grammys are wearing. From crazy weird–to crazy gorgeous, award shows seem to have it all!

Adele

When I see this I think, “Only Adele..” Which is a compliment! No one can quite pull off the vintage flare like her.

I also love that she’s channeling Russian nesting dolls. For the win, Adele.

Not quite ready to take on such a “big personality” dress? Try these. Same great shape (which flatters a lot of different body types) but not so bright.

Taylor Swift hit the red carpet in this ultra classy J. Mendel gown. With the braided low up-do, she’s obviously found her inner goddess.

Go Greek yourself! But maybe with a more appropriate neckline.

Can YOU spot the lady?

Don’t look too fast, you might miss Janelle Monae!

While we’re HUGE fan of the blazer/tailored jacket for men and woman alike, (and we’re definitely fans of JT and John) Janelle missed “strong woman” and went straight to matador. Lose the hat and tie, add some big voluptuous curls around that pretty face and this would have been on point.

She must have left her cape in the limo.

However, if you’re digging John M.’s classy jacket, steal the look for yourself!

*Side note: Leave the puffy purple eyes at home. John can keep THAT all to himself.

Katy Perry and Ashanti both hit the deck in peek-a-boob cutout dresses.

While these dresses aren’t awful, both would have been just as beautiful without gaping holes in the chest. Not my favorite look.

However, the color of Katy’s dress is right on point. If you like this “minty-seafoam green” you’re in luck! This color is super trending for spring this year. Pants, shirts, dresses, accessories–you got it.

Kelly Osbourne looked extra classy in this black Paule Ka gown.

Needless to say, Kelly has come a long way.

Good work, Kelly.

Like Kelly’s look?

Also comes in mint! Eep!

Lions, and tigers, and Florence–Oh my!

Florence of Florence + The Machine showed up in this little diddy.

Is it just us, or does she look like she was making a detour on her way to the Emerald City?

“I’ll get you my pretty! And your little horse too! So shake it out!”

Just kidding, just kidding…in all seriousness the color looks phenomenal on her and the cut is beautiful. It’s just a little much. And the spikes? Not helping.

Don’t worry, Florence, the flying monkeys are not after you.

Rihanna looked flawless in this gorgeous Alaia gown. I don’t care if you like her music or not, this look is a 10 for her. And her performance of “Stay” with Mikky Ekko?

11.

While this look is clearly elegant and glamourous, it can be replicated in a casual–but still classy way.

Don’t try them together though. Please.

I have faith…in Faith.

Faith Hill doesn’t ever look bad, but I never would have expected her to look this on point. This dress is adorable. Also, not really visible in this picture, but Faith not only wore J. Mendel–but she wore braces too!

And her smile is still beautiful.

Although Lisa D’Amato an Riff Raff did not come together to the Grammys, it is rumored that they were both planning on attending the circus afterwards and thought it inconvenient to bring a change of clothes.

Sometimes they’re the worst to look to when it comes to fashion.

Two Days Away!

30 Jan

Rules:

1. You MUST wear something new(that belongs to you) every day.
2. No re-wearing anything for the entire 30 days! (Exceptions: underclothes, work uniforms, shoes, and things of the like)
3. No buying new clothes! I know that sucks, but just for 30 days!
4. Take a picture of your outfit and tweet/instagram it to us! (Less of a rule, more of a suggestion–instagram.com/freespiritstylists)
5. At the end of the challenge purge your closet of the clothes/shoes/accessories you didn’t wear during the challenge/haven’t worn in several months or longer.

In these 30 days you’ll be able to figure out what in your closet you love, and what you can live without. You’ll be able to see what fits you well, and what maybe isn’t the most flattering on you anymore. Because you can’t re-wear items you’ll be able to mix and match your wardrobe and put together outfits you’ve never worn before! When it comes down to it this is about identifying the clothes that you love and make you feel good and getting rid of the rest! Simplify, purge, and fine tune your style with Skye and I on the 30 DAY CLOSET CEANSE!

The challenge is from February 1st–March 2d! Start your engines, ladies, and get ready!

Happy new year!

If you’re like me, the new year means several things to you.

It means having a salad for lunch instead of a hamburger(no matter how hot and delicious it is), it means taking the stairs instead of the elevator(even in 4 inch heels. Talk about a calf workout!), and it means watching a million health documentaries, freaking out, throwing away all the condiments and unhealthy snacks in my home, and buying a juicer. Well, that one was new this year.

IMG_4166

*side note*- in LOVE with my new juicer.

In general at the beginning of the year we all take a deep breath, brace ourselves, and take a good long look into the mirror in effort to “spot the difference” in the person we are and the person we want to be. In the season of self improvement and self bettering, Skye and I have a late resolution for you…and your closet.

If you’re an average fashion loving homo sapien, than you and I have something in common.

A closet bursting at the seams.                                                                                                                                                                                    Bursting with dresses, coats, jeans, slacks, blouses, sweaters, flats, scarves, heels, skirts, shorts, and an array of accessories. Skye and I do at least! The beginning of the year is all about self improvement, so why not do the same for you closet?! I can just about guarantee that in your closet you probably have enough clothes to last you several months, but you wash the same ones every week and wear them again! This challenge is about simplifying, purging, and fine tuning your closet.

I just joined a Zumba class, yes, part of the new year craze. Anyways, the first class I show up in some work out gear and my brown Champion tennis shoes.

IMG_4169

Gross.

I spent the first class slipping and sliding all over place, there was no traction on my tennis shoes anymore! Why? Because I bought those tennis shoes SIX YEARS AGO. Those were the tennis shoes I bought for my freshman gym class! Talk about too old to still be gracing my closet floor! I clearly bought new ones.

IMG_4168

Upgrade? I think so.

So here’s the challenge:

New Year, New You.

7 Jan

Hello world!
As previously mentioned, Graci and I took a leave of absence over the holidays, and it was mostly unintentional. However, with finals eating my brain for a snack, Graci traveling home with me and her husband for Christmas, celebrating our birthday, seeing old friends, and of course opening presents at every glorious turn, we just totally neglected to keep you in the holiday fashion loop!

Never fear, the wait has ended.

I want to introduce you to some inspiration for a new you just in time for a new year! What the heck, it’s 2013! With the end of the world falling on me and Graci’s birthday, not many of us really thought we’d get this far, right? Right! So it’s time to celebrate and put yourself out there. In other words, get your nerve up and make that big change!

HAIR CHANGE.

First, let me start by saying that Graci and I would never encourage you to do something we weren’t brave enough to do ourselves! So let me give you a little personal inspiration before I sick any celebrity inspiration on your over-stimulated, post-holiday minds.

             524871_415898815116669_100000896618346_1225598_2119685640_n523025_517587628269034_425324173_n

Yes! That’s me! I did a total 180 this fall when I came back to college and launched into junior year. I’ve been a blonde my whole life, and I finally got up my nerve and made the change I’d been wanting. Also, I’m currently in the process of going back to a Blake-Lively-honey-blonde, and it’s a lot of fun. The in-between stages are just as great as the big change!

Graci also has some inspiration to share.

    .graci_14384346_385867788156679_13791760_n

Lately, Graci has taken her strawberry blonde locks to a more fierce red, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Hopefully we can do a photo shoot soon to keep you all updated, but the bottom line is, this hair change was a complete success for her.

Now, for some classic celeb inspiration.

      ashley-green

Ashley Greene: one of my classic favorites for hair inspiration! This pretty lady has gone from dark, to honey, to blonde, and back again! From short, spikey haired Alice in Twilight, to a long luscious haired Cosmo cover, she is always experimenting and always winning.

               demi-lovato-in-black-hatdemi-lovato-jimmy-kimmel-nick-jonas-x-factor-video-1350683836

Demi Lovato: This Disney darling has been through it all! Lately on the cover of Teen Vogue, I saw her with blue lowlights, and it was pretty cute. Going from such a natural dark color to such a light blonde was a bold move, and I have to say it turned out pretty great! However, regardless of color, she always kills it with confidence!

    dakota-fanning11hair-1

Dakota Fanning: Is this our blonde sweetheart?! For the final twilight premiere, she appears to have switched it up for the first time. I’ve got to say, Graci and I are huge fans. Dakota rocks this look, and even though it’s different, it definitely brings out a whole new her.

"The Town" Premiere - 2010 Toronto International Film Festival701908_1303945229962_full

Blake Lively: Whether you’re a Sisterhood fan, or a Gossip Girl fan, you’ll know that Blake Lively is known for her perfect blonde hair, however, recently she has joined the ranks of the gingers, and it appears to have been a lovely choice.

       Jennifer-Lawrence-5jlawrence3_gl_9sep12_rex_bt_3

Jennifer Lawrence: Say what? I had no idea she was a blonde when I saw Hunger Games for the first time. To be honest, I can’t decide which I like better. She owns both of these.

          emma-stoneEmma Stone Red Hair Superman

Emma Stone: One word: respect. I adore Emma, and that’s all there is to it. She’s just so lovable and gorgeous no matter what she does, and her recent hair changes have only proven to me what a classic beauty she is.

          jessica-alba-38 jessicaalba_dolcegabana-mdn

Jessica Alba: Alright, besides the fact that nearly every girl I know wishes she could BE Jessica, and besides the fact that almost every guy wishes he could be WITH Jessica…. She’s just a stunner no matter what she does. I love her with dark hair, personally, but the blonde is beautiful too. She just wins all around.

     Hilary-Duff-1  Hilary Duff wallpaper 4hilary%2520duff-10

Hilary Duff: Okay, not fair that one girl can look so incredible with such violently different hair colors. Does it just come with the territory that ALL actresses can look amazing with any hair color? I’m beginning to wonder.

               miley-cyrus-birthday-400x300miley-cyrus-1-600

Miley Cyrus: Alright, now this has got to be BY FAR the biggest hair change I’ve seen. I’m not gonna lie, I’m a much bigger fan of the long, dark, layered, Victoria Secret hair, but she does make the short, rocker, blonde hair look pretty cute.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON FOX Television 2006 TCA Winter Party

Nikki Reed: Wow, wow, wow. She is one SERIOUSLY beautiful lady. Dark is her natural color, but for Twilight she donned some pretty light blonde locks. Personally, dark is definitely her color, but she did make a beautiful blonde as well.

Alright, prepare yourselves for the grand finale, ladies.

                                       rachel_mcadams_jivebunnys5200004Rachel-3-rachel-mcadams-16608857-1920-1200rachel-mcadams-20080306052834098                                                            short-hair-styles-in-rachel-mcadamsRachelMcAdams-rachel-mcadams-741925_1024_768  Rachel-3-rachel-mcadams-3546756-1502-2252

Rachel McAdams: Oh, come ON. I’m officially convinced that Rachel McAdams owns the hair change competition. She is literally stunning in EVERY hair color, and to possess the bravery to try all of these colors is beyond my comprehension. Short, medium, long, blonde, honey, red, brown, black… Rachel has been there, done that, and gone back again ten times. She wins hands down.

Well, I know this one was a little long, and I’m sure you’ve come to expect that by now… But I hope you are inspired! Always remember to ASK your stylist and get it done PROFESSIONALLY the first time! Take into consideration your skin tone, and the time of year when making a change. And lastly, there is NOTHING wrong with going in small steps! Some of us just jump on in, and others of us need highlights or lowlights to test the waters! Regardless of your style, a hair change is good for almost everyone. Having said that, put on your big girl pants and introduce the world to a brand new you for a brand new year!

Happy 2013!
Be yourself, always.
Skye

Introducing for the very first time—Graci Phillips and Skye Lingenfelter!

Two free spirit stylists, friends, and bargain savvy fashionistas.

What will you find in this small corner of the blogsphere? Things we LOVE. We are incredibly excited to share everything with you. New styles we love, new styles we hate, our favorite places to shop, our best bargains, tips and tricks, how to make what’s working on the runway work on you, and the best part…how to dress to the nines without breaking the bank.

So thank you for reading this far and we hope you enjoy the things we love as much as we do. 🙂

BE YOURSELF. ALWAYS.

Skye: Born a southern belle and transported, unwillingly, to a small Indiana town when I was 9.

It was the best thing that’s every happened to me.

I met the friends who are now considered my best, and fast became the sister of a grand total of 10 kids. I’ve been playing golf since I was three I’m currently attending USI on a golf scholarship and majoring in psychology. I’m a total nerd and live off big words and learning about mental abnormalities.

Graci: Born in Nashville and lived a peaceful life until 1999.

I was then thrown on a motorhome with a group of crazy adults and carted all over the countries with my parents for the next ten years. An important thing I learned growing up is to always be yourself and don’t worry what other people think. You meet new people everyday.

Some people will like you and some won’t. The important thing is to love yourself.

I currently live back in Nashville and am pursuing a music career. Check it out– www.graciphillips.com
